By the end of August, Southern Oregon skin has been through a lot. Months of high-elevation sun, long days on the Rogue, smoky afternoons, and dry inland heat leave behind a familiar set of changes: uneven tone, brown patches across the cheeks and forehead, rough texture, and fine lines that look deeper than they did in May. Late summer is when patients start noticing it in the mirror — and it's also when the calendar finally starts working in your favor.
Any treatment that resurfaces the skin temporarily makes it more sensitive to ultraviolet light. That's the core reason resurfacing is a cool-weather project. As the sun angle drops through September and October and daily UV exposure falls with it, it becomes far easier to protect freshly treated skin — which protects your results.
The practical version: a peel done in late September is much less likely to be undone by an unplanned afternoon outdoors than the same peel done in July. If you've been putting off addressing sun damage, the next couple of months are the window.
A chemical peel uses a solution of acids — glycolic, salicylic, lactic, or trichloroacetic acid, among others — applied to the skin for a controlled period of time. The solution loosens the bonds between dead and damaged surface cells so they shed, prompting the skin underneath to rebuild with more even pigment and smoother texture.
Depth is what separates one peel from another. Superficial peels work within the outer layer of the epidermis and are the workhorse of a maintenance routine. Medium-depth peels reach into the upper dermis and address more established pigment and texture concerns, with correspondingly more visible peeling afterward. The right depth depends on your skin type, what you're treating, and how much downtime your schedule can absorb.
Peels are not a substitute for deeper resurfacing. If you're weighing more significant texture change or scarring, a CO2 laser or CoolPeel conversation may be the better starting point — and that's a decision worth making with a provider rather than from a treatment menu.
Superficial peels typically produce a few days of light flaking, similar to a mild sunburn peeling, and most people return to normal activity immediately. Medium-depth peels involve more noticeable shedding over roughly five to seven days, plus redness that fades over a week or two. Your provider will give you specific aftercare instructions, but the constants are the same across every depth: no picking, gentle cleansing, generous moisturizer, and disciplined daily sunscreen.
That last point isn't a formality. Sun exposure after a peel is the fastest way to trade improved pigment for new pigment, particularly for patients prone to melasma. A broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, reapplied through the day, is part of the treatment — not an add-on to it.
Peels tend to work best as part of a plan rather than a one-off. For pigment concerns, that often means preparing the skin with the right topicals first, treating in a series spaced a few weeks apart, and then maintaining results through the winter. For patients also considering laser treatment, sequencing matters — doing both at once is rarely the right call.
It's also worth noting what a peel is not: it isn't a skin cancer screening. If you've spent this summer outdoors and you're noticing a spot that's changing, bleeding, or simply not healing, that belongs in a medical dermatology visit, not an aesthetics one.
