That's the right call for light-based treatments — but it leaves a gap for patients who want to start improving their skin's texture now, over the rest of summer. Radiofrequency (RF) microneedling is one of the few skin-renewing treatments that fits comfortably into a summer schedule, which is why it's worth understanding on its own terms.
Traditional microneedling uses fine needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin, triggering your body's natural wound-healing response and a fresh wave of collagen and elastin. RF microneedling adds a second mechanism: as the needles penetrate, they deliver radiofrequency energy directly into the deeper layers of the skin, heating the tissue in a precise, controlled way. That combination — mechanical injury plus thermal energy — produces more collagen remodeling than needling alone, reaching depths that needles by themselves don't consistently affect.
Because the energy is delivered under the skin's surface rather than through it, RF microneedling doesn't rely on targeting pigment or blood vessels the way IPL or laser treatments do. That's the key difference that makes it more forgiving of ongoing summer sun exposure.

This is the detail that surprises a lot of patients: because RF microneedling's energy works beneath the skin rather than targeting the surface, it doesn't carry the same strict sun-avoidance requirements that make late summer and fall the preferred window for BBL or ablative laser resurfacing. We apply topical numbing before treatment, and most sessions take 30 to 45 minutes depending on the area.
